The waiting room's floral wallpaper seemed to be closing in around her. The air was thick, stale. Sarah fiddled with the strap of her bag, pulling it up, pushing it down, over and over. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. She had known Liam for years. They’d dreamed of working together in this very department.

Each tick of the clock was a hammer blow against her patience. The man ahead of her was taking an eternity. He spoke at length, laughing at something the interviewer said. She fought the urge to roll her eyes, to shout at him to hurry up.

She glanced at the door, willing it to open. The thought of seeing Liam after the interview twisted in her gut. Regardless of the outcome, their friendship had been irrevocably altered. A cold dread seeped into her bones.
